Due to inquiries about the accommodation campaign in the student dormitories, a meeting was held between the Rectors Managing Body in the person of the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, the Vice-Rectors Prof. Dr. Matilda Alexandrova and Prof. Dr. Tsvetana Stoyanova and the Chairman of the Student Council Mr. Ilian Chabukliysky. Issues related to student accommodation for the 2024/2025 academic year were discussed. It was reported that the main part of the accommodation process of the newly admitted students in Bachelor`s and Master`s degrees had been successfully completed. The decisions taken at the meeting of the Inter-University Commission for Allocation of Vacant Places in Student Dormitories were also discussed and concrete steps were identified to find a solution for the several hundred first year students remaining without a dormitory.
The most important questions of interest to students were answered.
Why are there not enough places in student residences?
The main problem with the lack of places for this academic year is related to the renovations of Block 40A and Block 9, which have a total of 1069 places. Traditionally, the UNWE has a shortage of 500 to 700 places in its own facilities, so it has to rely on other universities' facilities. This year, however, the situation is complicated due to the upcoming renovation works at other educational institutions such as the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, National Sports Academy and Medical University of Sofia, St. Kliment Ohridsky University of Sofia, University of Mining and Geology of Sofia, which usually provide places for our students. The applicants for dormitories at the UNWE this year are around 6 000 and the University has at disposal 5 100 places, which are now reduced to 4 000 places due to the renovation works. However, the administration resolves the situation in stages.
What is the current situation?
All students who have applied for additional admission as well as those with a grade below 3.50 from the second, third and fourth year and the newly admitted Bachelor`s degree students with a grade below 4.70 have already been ranked. In recent years, it was common practice to issue exchange letters in order to keep their places. Many of them were already living in dormitories of other universities from previous years and had to receive an exchange letter to keep their place.
As a result of negotiations with the Managing Bodies of other universities in Sofia, an additional 450 places were provided from the University of Mining and Geology of Sofia and the UNWE students completely filled two of its blocks. In addition, another 100 places were made available by the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy, 50 places - by Todor Kableshkov University of Transportation and 50 places - by the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, where our students were also accommodated. Almost 1 000 exchange letters were issued for the transfer of students to the facilities of other universities.
How many places must still be provided?
Within two weeks, the University has accommodated more than 350 additional first year students in the facilities of other universities and another 250 places for students are still necessary.
How the necessary places will be provided?
About 50 places in UNWE's bed base are to be made available by students who have passed their Master's degree exams. We expect the 10th block of the State Music Academy and the 1st block of the University of Technology to be made operational by November and thus additional places for our students will be provided.
When will the additional places be made available for the UNWE students?
The accommodation process takes between 20 and 50 days and we will make every effort to provide accommodation for all willing students.
What should do a student who is not accommodatedyet?
We urge all students who have not been placed yet to visit the Accommodation Sector and to enroll themselves in the waiting list.
