Students from the Legal Faculty of UNWE took part in the prestigious competition on the European Union Law entitled Central and East European Moot Court Competition (CEEMC 2013) under the aegis of the European Union Court of Justice. The participation of our university in the competition has already become a tradition. UNWE took an exclusively good place in the ranking and won a special individual award for the rhetoric mastery of one of its participant.

CEEMC is organized by the British Law Centre in Warsaw under the aegis of the European Union Court of Justice and the Center for European Legal Studies to the University of Cambridge, UK. The competition was held for the 19th time and hosts of the event were the Legal Faculty of University of Brno and the Supreme Administrative Court of the Czech Republic. Traditionally, the event was chaired by Eleanor Sharpston, Advocate General at the European Union Court of Justice.

The Rector of UNWE Prof. D.Sc. (Econ.) Statty Stattev met with our competitors and their coach after their returning from the Chezh Republic.

The competition is a kind of simulated legal proceedings before the European Court of Justice in which teams of prestigious universities from Central and East Europe defend the position of plaintiffs and defendants in a preliminary prepared case in the English language. The current edition of the competition was devoted to the controversial issues on the European warrant of arrest and the observation of human rights in the context of its application. In relation to the case there were made 5 questions to the European Union Court of Justice in the form of preliminary inquiry by a national court. Re-embodying in the role of lawyers the students had to submit written defence on behalf of the plaintiff and the defendant as well as to prepare their pleadings for the oral participation in the competition.

The team of UNWE (from the left to the right): Andon Tashukov, Polina Hristova and Alexander Nanov.

The UNWE took part in the event by a team of three students: Alexander Nanov (4th year undergraduate), Polina Hristova (3rd year undergraduate) and Andon Tashukov (semester of graduation). Coaches of the team were the former alumni of our university Radostina Mladenova, participant in the CEEMC 2011 and Gergana Ilieva, participant in the CEEMC 2012.

The UNWE team was determined to plead as a plaintiff against the team of the Free University of Tbilisi, Georgia who was a pretender for the first place but finally lost. In the “game” as defendants our students played against the Gdansk University, Poland and won a victory over it by 9 points difference. The UNWE team had the honour to be listened by performing the role of judges Dr. Jonathan Morgan from the University of Cambridge, Prof. Michael Bobek from the College of Europe, Katrin Howden, Legal Adviser at the UK Law Society in Brussels, Nick Fletcher, partner and lawyer at the Clifford Chance Solicitors – one of the largest law companies in England and many others.

At the opening of the competition. From the left to the right: Gergana Ilieva (coach), Polina Hristova, Andon Tashukov and Alexander Nanov

By a total score of 148 points from its pleadings and written defences our university occupied the prestigious 9th place and only 0, 75 points more were needed to it to be ranked among the first eight semi-finalists. However, the UNWE team received many positive reviews for its performance and assurances of the judges in the enormous potential of Bulgarian students.

Before the first game

At the official dinner on the occasion of closing of the competition were given also the individual awards to the most outstanding orators. During the ceremony, it was cleared that the work and skills of Alexander Nanov had been specifically noticed and appreciated by the judges and he was awarded by a certificate of rhetoric mastery. A team of students from the speciality Business Administration at the UNWE was successfully ranked for its innovative idea in the fourth season of the competition 3Challenge.

3Challenge is a tournament on entrepreneurship organized by the largest club on entrepreneurship in Bulgaria - Start It Smart. The purpose of the competition is to show how an idea could be turned in a sustainably working business for 6 months. Students from the UNWE presented themselves by the new method created by them for prognostication of future events and generation of ideas in and out of the organization. The method is based on the theory for “collective intelligence” – the ability of a group of people to forecast and assess future events more precisely than each expert in the relevant field.

Our students team

Along with the competition 3Challenge the team participates also in the academic campaign for students of the organization Junior Achievement, season 2012-2013.

According to the words of the young entrepreneurs the participation in such competitions is a real challenge and a way for them to strengthen and approve their knowledge once again!

For the 8th consecutive year Bulgarian economists celebrate their professional holiday. 11th of June was determined as a professional holiday of Bulgarian economists by the Ministers Council Decision №320 of April, 29th, 2005. It was made on the occasion of the 110th Anniversary from the foundation of the first Bulgarian Economic Association which in 1990 was renamed Union of Economists in Bulgaria.

On the occasion of the professional holiday Prof. D.Sc. (Philosophy) Krastyo Petkov, Chairman of the Union of Economists in Bulgaria and lecturer at the UNWE addressed to his colleagues. He pointed out that Bulgarian economists had many reasons of being proud and morally pleased with their professional community because:

“The Union of Bulgarian Economists is the successor of one of the first professional guilds and associations founded after the Liberation (1895): Bulgarian Economic Association. The initial objective of this noble initiative - to work for "the advancement of people's livelihood" - is also relevant in the present days. Bulgaria is experiencing a severe economic crisis. The welfare of the majority of Bulgarians is put to a serious test. In such historical situations the economic science is called to help the government and people in their efforts to prevent the looming economic and social disaster;

For many years eminent intellectuals, statesmen and guild leaders have devoted to the cause of our Union. Bulgaria`s economic elite has proven itself in the history as an integral part of the nation bearing with responsibility the mission of intellectual leadership in crucial times. Today we are faced to a similar challenge again: to trace out the road to the economic recovery, material and social prosperity of Bulgaria;

Bulgarian economists have never put up with the idea for the development of Bulgaria as peripheral / buffer zone in Europe, as a country doomed to come up forever with its richer partners. In the last 20th century as a nation we have experienced periods of remarkable economic progress, we have made breakthroughs in key areas of science and technology, material production, education and culture. The key to success now is in the alternative strategic solutions, non-standard and specific for Bulgarian conditions. The progress will depend crucially on the contribution of the Bulgarian economic science.

Therefore, the professional holiday is also an occasion for intellectual mobilization, for a harsh intensification of the creative and public activity in the guild of Bulgarian economists.

It is namely the belief grounded in the calendar of professional events of the Union of Economists in Bulgaria which is full of discussion forums and participation in projects involving one the most prepared researchers and practitioners from Bulgaria and abroad.” (…)

In his address Prof. Petkov also said: “Today, we, the inheritors of Bulgarian Economic Association must pay the tribute respect to its founders. And, along with this, we must be worthy successors of their historical covenant: we must be together with Bulgarian people and we must be a pro-active part of the civil society – whenever there is the greatest need of the national creative intellectuals.

Happy holiday to all Bulgarian economists!”
